About Manik Sarkar
Manik Sarkar was born on 22nd January, 1949 in Radhakishorepur, Tripura. He is an Indian Communist Politician. In the year 1998 he became the Chief Minister of Tripura for the first time. He is the longest serving CM of Tripura. He belongs to the CPM -Communist Party of India (Marxist) and is a member of its 15 member Politburo. Tripura is the only state in India where the CPM led the left front is in power. He is been elected as the CM for the fourth consecutive time in Tripura.
Manik Sarkar is known for its personal integrity and honesty. Mr. Sarkar had declared that he had no personal asset when he submitted his nomination for the Assembly elections in 2008. According to the affidavit submitted by Mr. Sarkar he owns no land, vehicle or any movable or immovable assets. He is possibly the only major politician who survives on the monthly salary he receives as CM.
In the tear 1967 he joined politics as a youth. CPM was then the opposition party in the state and Mr. Sarkar had participated in the food movement which was organized by the CPM. In the 1968 he joined the CPM party.
He first contested the Assembly election in the year 1981 and won a by- election from Krishnanagar constituency. He was appointed the Chief Whip of the ruling CPM. He was reelected to the Assembly from Krishnanagar in 1983.
In2008, he contested the Assembly election for the fifth time and led his party to a stunning victory, crushing the congress party in the state.
