About Okram Ibobi Singh

Okram Ibobi Singh (born 19 July 1948) is the Chief Minister of the state of Manipur, India. He has held that position since 7 March 2002. In 2012, he helped his party win the state election for the third time with an absolute majority securing 42 out of the total 60 assembly seats, brushing aside anti-incumbency factor once again. He is a member of the Indian National Congress.

He was born to Okram Angoubi and Lukamani Devi. He was born in Thoubal Athokpam. He was the 12th son. In order to support his family, he used to domesticate pigs and also did odd jobs. He was a below average student during his school days but industrious, and he got his graduation degree from Thoubal College, Thoubal. He was a good friend of veteran manipuri singer Naba Volcano( naba's popular name) . He was married to Landhoni Devi. She is the first women MLA in Thoubal dist. She has won two consecutive elections of Manipur Legislative Assembly.

On 2 September 2008, rebels in the state of Manipur attacked Okram Singh's house with rocket launchers while he and his family were sleeping. One security guard was injured in the attack, but Singh and his family were unharmed. The attackers have yet to be apprehended. A member of the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak claimed responsibility for the attack via phone, and indicated it was meant as a warning to Singh to stop policies meant to thwart the insurgency in Manipur.
